Across many communities, gender-based violence remains a persistent challenge affecting the safety, dignity, and well-being of women and girls. While progress has been made in raising awareness, harmful practices and unequal power dynamics continue to limit opportunities and threaten lives.
At the Centre for Community Mobilization and Empowerment (CECOME), we believe that sustainable change begins within communities. By working closely with local leaders, families, and young people, we are creating spaces where open dialogue can take place and long-standing norms can be transformed.
Understanding the Challenge
Gender-based violence is not only a personal issue—it is a societal concern that affects entire communities. It limits access to education, reduces economic opportunities, and perpetuates cycles of inequality. In many cases, silence and stigma prevent survivors from seeking help, making it even more important to address both the root causes and the consequences of violence.
Community-Led Solutions
CECOME’s approach focuses on empowering communities to become part of the solution. Through awareness campaigns, training sessions, and community dialogues, we work to challenge harmful beliefs and promote positive social change.
Our programs also emphasize the importance of engaging men and boys as allies in the fight against gender-based violence. By fostering mutual respect and understanding, we are helping to build safer environments for everyone.

Promoting Alternatives and Protecting Rights
In areas where harmful cultural practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) are prevalent, CECOME promotes Alternative Rites of Passage (ARP). These initiatives respect cultural traditions while safeguarding the health and rights of girls.
Through education and collaboration, communities are beginning to embrace these alternatives, demonstrating that cultural identity can be preserved without causing harm.
Stories of Change
Behind every program are individuals whose lives have been transformed. Young women who once felt voiceless are now leading conversations in their communities. Families are choosing safer futures for their daughters. Community leaders are standing up to advocate for change.
These stories remind us that progress is possible when communities come together with a shared vision.
Looking Ahead
While challenges remain, the commitment of communities gives us hope. Continued collaboration, education, and support are essential to sustaining progress and reaching more individuals in need.
At CECOME, we remain dedicated to building a future where women and girls can live free from violence and discrimination.
