YOUTH CAMP: In the walk and talk, the youth assembled in group .

The training was opened by the Marani sub-county assistant county commissioner and the area chief Mr. Lawrence Masieka who were welcomed by the Cecome Executive director Madam Stella Acholi.

The youth camp 2019 had 150 (80 male-53% & 70 female-47%) participants drawn from the larger Kegogi location. The youth assembled at Tambacha hall for a two – day training and interactive sessions.

Sports activity.

The outdoor activities intended to have the youths socialize and reflect on the days learning experience as well nurture and appreciate talent. The activities included sack racing, egg racing and eating competition, 4*4 relay marathons and rope skipping among others. The youth competed well and the winning teams awarded.

Walk and Talk

In the walk and talk, the youth assembled in groups randomly and held talks on the situation of Gender Based Violence in the community and what the youth could do to end the violence. They moved in a random three minute lapse to make discussions with different sets of groups on the same topic. They then held a round table discussion to present their revelations and findings from the discussions.

Group Discussions

The youth also assembled in group discussions to discuss teenage pregnancy in the area. The ministry of health estimates that one in five (18%) girls aged 15-19 years in Kisii County have begun childbearing – 2.5% are pregnant with their first child and 15.9% have ever given birth. As a result, Kisii county’s age specific fertility rate for girls aged 15-19 (adolescent birth rate) is 99 births per 1000 girls, similar to the national level (96).

The youths discussed the worrying trends and presented their recommendations among them sensitization of the girls and boys on teenage pregnancy and ensuring effective reporting mechanisms on the perpetrators of teenage pregnancy.

Career Development.

The youth had an interactive session with a career development expert invited to share with them. The expert talked on areas they were curious on ranging from, decision making on career choices, marketable courses, life after high school, strategies for improvement in exams and how to remain focused in education towards a targeted career.

Question and answer session.

The youth had a chance to engage with the reproductive health coordinator for Marani sub-county, adolescent counselor – Marani sub-county, Cecome staff, Media personalities and other invited guest speakers experienced in matters youth. The youth asked questions ranging from Relationships, STIs, decision making, parent-youth relationships and safe sex among others.

BOYS ONLY AND GIRLS ONLY SESSIONS

The boys and girls only sessions were held with the girls and boys holding excluded sessions with female and male staff and professionals respectively. The aim of the session was to have the boys and girls share challenges and questions unique to their gender.

The next youth camp will be held in April 2020.
